Ford On Film

Chronicles of a silver screen addict

The most unique film of the year, The Tribe, is out now on DVD

From the first trailers, it was clear that Ukrainian drama The Tribe was going to be something completely original. Set in a boarding school for the deaf, The Tribe is unique in that it features no spoken words; it’s entirely performed in sign language, with absolutely no subtitles.

The film looks terrific, its eerie silence fitting well with the relentlessly brutal and downbeat tone of the trailer. Is it gimmicky? Sure, but when it looks this good, who cares? Most people, myself included, missed out on the chance to experience The Tribe in the cinemas (it barely received a release in the UK), but the good news is the film has now been released on DVD and Blu Ray. If you’re interested in supporting genuinely original, different independent cinema, go out of your way to see The Tribe.
